ASL Starting Fall 2026 - weekly meeting time TBD

This is an opportunity to do undergrauate (or graduate) research at UAkron. This is a place for students and I to get together to talk about various current issues surrounding Stats / Data Science / Actuarial Science. Our world is rapidly changing. Let's get together and talk about that cool thing you came across last week!
Below are list of things I'm interested in. Fell free to bring your own topic!

You can register for 1cr to explore some ideas, participte in discussion, learn some new things and give two 10min presentation per semester on the topic of your choice. Or, youcan register for 2cr if you have a big project alrealy in mind. If you accumulate 3cr, this will count as Stat Elective.
You can also just show up to the meeting without registering, and hang out. All are welcome.

Modeling with Machine Learning

we can create our own dataset by scraping the web ourselves.
PC beat human in Chess quite a while ago, but human vs human in shorter period of time (1min ~ 30min) are very popular today. What is the current chess model? What kind of chess algo behaves like 'novice'? or like 'intermediate'?

Language Models

AI uses LLM. It is a nural-network model that is trained on large text data. Can we try to build smaller-scale large languate models from scratch? There are some books avaialbe.
Can we make a chatbot that actually works? How hard/easy is it? Is it useful?
Learn how to go through text data and summarize what's written? What does the current tools look like, and what can it do? What is the limitation?
